De ce m-as marita cu tine?
”
I’ve always joked around with Marius that there are only 3 reasons I’ve wanted to marry him.
1. When I was in Romania for the first time I went with some friends to visit some of Brasov’s historical sites. One of those sites was Cetate, a medieval fortress. Cetate is now both a place to visit and also a restaurant. While we were there a wedding party appeared and was admitted with fanfare — a trumpeter sounded there arrival and a guard demanded a password for their entry. I was entranced and thought how much I’d love to get married in such a place. After Marius and I got engaged and chose Cetate for our wedding reception, I told him that one of the reasons I wanted to marry him was so that I could have my wedding at Cetate.
2. Marius works for R.A.T. I don’t actually know what the acronym stands for but R.A.T. is the public transportation system. People who work for R.A.T. do not have to pay a fare to ride the buses, trams or trolleys within the city they work in. Also they can have one person with them who rides free. And their spouses and children are given passes that relieve them of having to pay a fare. When I found this out I told Marius that I wanted to marry him so I wouldn’t have to pay to ride the buses, trams or trolleys in Brasov.
3. When Marius and I first got engaged his friends told me that I would get a Romanian citizenship right away. I was very excited because I knew that in 2007 Romania would become part of the European Union and if I had a Romanian citizenship before that, I would automatically be given an E.U. citizenship. And how amazing would that be! To have a U.S. and E.U. citizenship. Because the “joke” has always been that Marius wanted to marry me as a way to get to the States (so many people warned me of this!) I used to tell him that actually it was the other way around. I wanted to get a Romanian citizenship and that’s why I was marrying him. I have since learned that I don’t automatially get a Romanian citizenship. I would need first to become a legal resident here and then live here for an additional 3 years before I would qualify for Romanian citizenship. So I won’t be getting my E.U. citizenship after all.
Well, out of the 3 reasons I married at least 2 have come to fruition.
